A personal and powerful essay from Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, the best-selling author of Americanah and Half of a Yellow Sun, based on her 2013 TEDx talk of the same name.

'I would like to ask that we begin to dream about and plan for a different world. A fairer world. A world of happier men and happier women who are truer to themselves. And this is how to start we must raise our daughters differently. We must also raise our sons differently....'

What does feminism mean today?

In this personal, eloquently argued essay - adapted from her much-admired TEDx talk of the same name - Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie offers listeners a unique definition of feminism for the 21st century, one rooted in inclusion and awareness. Drawing extensively on her own experiences and her deep understanding of the often masked realities of sexual politics, here is one remarkable author's exploration of what it means to be a woman now - an of-the-moment rallying cry for why we should all be feminists.

We Should All Be Feminists (Audible Audio Edition) Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie HarperCollins Publishers Limited Books

This book was chosen for my book club to read this month. Before reading it, I watched the author's TED Talk and was inspired. I assumed the book would expand a bit on the things she discussed in her talk, but the book felt word for word her lecture. That was the only disappointing thing about reading this. I was hoping for a bit more meat. But it did inspire me to look into other books on the topic.

We Should All Be Feminists (Audible Audio Edition) Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie HarperCollins Publishers Limited Books Reviews

Well, my expectations were high. When you set high expectations for a book, they're sometimes not met. And this proved to be true after I finished the book in one hour. First, I should mention Chimamanda's argument defending feminism is very well-put and easy to understand. She opened my eyes to some aspects of gender roles I wasn't aware of, such as how wives say "thank you" after their husbands change the baby's diaper. Her argument is straightforward. But, being a feminist for 5 years, it's nothing I don't already know. I think this book would prove useful to anyone unfamiliar with how feminism stands today.
Okay the writer is an amazing woman & so is this cute little book of hers. And yeah I do mean when I say cute and little! Super compact & the words are big and easy to read!
his book is a very short adaptation of the TED talk by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie of the same name. She talks of her experience of sexism growing up in Nigeria and how it has effected her life. It discusses why we still need feminism and why each and every person should be a feminist.

Personally, I love the eloquent way this essay is worded; it’s persuasive but doesn’t pressure you or force you into agreeing with her. It doesn’t have to because her story speaks for itself. What I think is really important is how she emphasises the way that feminism is about equality between both sexes, something which is at the core of feminism but is overlooked so often in today’s society.

This book is tiny, insightful and would make a perfect present as it also looks gorgeous. I highly recommend this to teenagers and young adults who are just being introduced to the concept on feminism, but equally anyone with an interest in the subject would also love it. It’s a great short read and one I wish every person was made to read.

By defining feminism and what it is to be a woman in the world, Adichie sends forth both comfort and a challenge. Once when I was young, my great-grandmother told me about our city before pavement, and how they were sure cars would never last because they were impractical. Had the world listened, instead of putting down pavement, we'd all still be walking or riding horses. Women today too often accept the dated definition of what it is to be female, and content themselves with walking the dirt roads when there is a better way. It requires changes. It isn't easy. It will never be easy. The day we think it is, we will have forgotten how much was given to have it.

"We should all be Feminists" is inspiring.I was first introduced to this book by hearing the spoken word version in Beyonce's Song, "Flawless".Crucial Key points were made in this book.Women who live in a "Male Dominated World" have to work twice as hard to be considered "equal".We cannot continue to neglect Gender Inequality. Males and Females are different but why has society deemed females inadequate to Males? Why must certain limitations be set for females but not for males? After reading this book, I am more engaged and stronger with my femininity.I really enjoyed reading this book.I am unapologetically female and black and I thank Chimamanda for bringing "Feminism" to the forefront.
If you heard this speech, you found yourself just listening to stories, giggling a bit. Then you realized she taught you something or she said something you couldn't quite explain to others very well. She has made people deaf to anything but stereotypes about feminism sit up and pay attention and realize, "Wow this is mostly common sense" and "I see that all the time and I never thought about how that affects" us/them.

She did all this while making people laugh at some of the more ridiculous indignities she and other women deal with day in and day out. Then she goes a little deeper. Then gets lighter again. She's simply an excellent teacher-speaker that happens to be a feminist.
I personally thought this book was terrible... at least the first 3/4 of it, because that's all I could get through. It's probably my fault, but I expected it to expand on the reasons why we all need to be feminists. The author gives scenarios of where something has happened to slight women or girls, but goes no further with it. The book was more of a downer to me than it was inspiring. If you are a woman, you KNOW what it's like to be made to feel like you're less than... we don't need to hear more stories. Even if you don't.... or won't let it get to you, there has almost always been at least once where this has happened (especially when it first does). Now, if the book changed in the last 1/4, my review still stands. I read through most of it and got nothing (thus, wasted my time).

I would have liked the book to be more pro-active, to give girls and young women an arsenal of weapons that'll soften the blows when, unfortunately, insults come their way. I kept hoping it would get better, but it didn't... We need to continue to stay strong and keep fighting our way through life, until we are equal. Getting equal pay and to be BELIEVED would (should) be the first things on the list.
